Fishing

Harry trying to catch a big fish

Catch a massive Silver Cobbler or Sooty Grunter on Lake Argyle or hook a huge Barramundi on the infamous Lower Ord. 26 species of native fish inhabit the lake, plus a few Barramundi that managed to escape from an aquaculture project. The most common fish caught is the Bottlenose Catfish which can be eaten, but with a bit more persistance and the use of lures or live bait you can hook onto their larger cousins - the Shovel Nose Catfish (commercially known as the "Silver Cobbler"). Sooty Grunter are great to catch and the Long Tom also puts up a good fight and is not too bad to eat. Access to Lake Argyle is limited to only one location – the boat ramp which is a short gravel road down to the lake. You can launch your own boat or fish from the shore in a variety of locations.

Catch a "Barra" at the Spillway Creek

At the end of most wet seasons (March - June) depending on the rainfall, the spillway creek is recognised as one of the best spots in the Kimberley to land the prized Barrumundi. The spillway is the overflow from Lake Argyle and is easily accessible just 8km from the village.

Visit us at the village store and ask for some hints on the best bait and places to go! We can almost guarantee that you will catch a fish of some kind all year round.

Please always observe state and/or local regulations on Size and Bag limitations, if you are unsure just ask the friendly staff at the Village store.

Ask us about fishing charters available on the lake!

"If one were to paint this country in it's true colours, I doubt it would be believed. It would be said at least that the artist exaggerated greatly, for never have I seen such richness and variety of hue as in these ranges"
